FAQs
What is the FAVN test that is required?
The Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation (FAVN) test is a live virus test which determines whether the animal has adequate levels of rabies antibodies following vaccination. An antibody level ≥0.5IU/ml is deemed adequate to protect against rabies. It’s a common test for pets traveling to rabies-free countries. This is a separate test that is not the same as a current rabies vaccination.
How far in advance should I start planning?
When traveling with a pet to an international destination it is advised to start planning well in advance. In most instances we suggest at least six months to begin the process. Some tests can take awhile for turnaround time or are subject to precise validity periods. Make sure your pet remains current on all vaccinations and do not let any of the vaccinations lapse especially rabies.
Does my pet need to be microchipped?
Yes, a pet should be microchipped for international travel. It is important that your pet be microchipped before the initial rabies vaccine or this can impact validity. Also, make sure to include your pet’s microchip number on all corresponding health certificates, tests, and rabies vaccinations. In addition, you should have a certificate of microchip that states your pet’s name, microchip number, date of implantation, and anatomical location. Before travel make sure to have your vet scan the microchip to make sure it is readable.
Does my pet need to meet entry requirements if staying on board?
This will depend on the destination. In some cases a pet may need to be granted an in-transit permit and for other destinations a pet may not be allowed in the waters of the jurisdiction. It is very important to obtain this information as per entry allowance or in transit protocol when traveling with a pet on onboard and even if not disembarking.
